Queenstown: Kleine Stadt, großer See, noch größere Klappe
Queenstown ist offiziell eine Stadt. Das steht so auf Schildern, auf der Website der Gemeindeverwaltung und in jedem Reiseführer, der das mit derselben Feierlichkeit verkündet wie ein Bäcker, der sein Brötchen "handwerklich" nennt. Tatsächlich ist Queenstown mit knapp 29.000 Einwohnern eher ein besonders lautes Dorf, das es geschafft hat, mehr Weltruhm anzuhäufen als Städte mit dem Zehnfachen an Menschen und einem Bruchteil des Adrenalins. Man könnte sagen, Queenstown verhält sich zu einer echten Großstadt wie ein Taschenmesser zu einem Presslufthammer: kleiner, lauter, und man sollte es nicht ohne Vorsicht in der Hosentasche tragen.

Tauranga: Eine Stadt, die sich selbst als "Outline" bezeichnet und trotzdem existiert
Tauranga liegt an der Ostküste der neuseeländischen Nordinsel, hat gut 120.000 Einwohner und ist damit die sechstgrößte Stadt des Landes. Das ist ungefähr so, als würde man sich rühmen, der sechstälteste Kaugummi unter dem Schulpult zu sein. Trotzdem: sechstgrößte Stadt eines ganzen Landes zu sein bringt eine gewisse Würde mit sich, ähnlich wie ein Bronzemedaillengewinner, der niemandem erzählt, dass es nur sechs Teilnehmer gab.
Der Name kommt aus dem Māori und bedeutet so viel wie "geschützter Ankerplatz". Das trifft es gut, denn die Stadt liegt am Kopf eines großen Hafens, der von Matakana Island abgeschirmt wird wie ein Kind, das seine kleinere Schwester vor dem Wind versteckt, ohne dabei besonders viel Mühe zu investieren.
Direkt am Hafeneingang steht Mount Maunganui, liebevoll "The Mount" genannt, offiziell ein Vorort von Tauranga, inoffiziell eine eigene Stadt mit eigenem Ego. Es ist eine der bekanntesten Urlaubsdestinationen Neuseelands, berühmt für seine Strände, und es verhält sich zu Tauranga ungefähr so, wie ein extrovertierter jüngerer Bruder sich zu seiner Steuerberater-Familie verhält: technisch dazugehörig, gefühlt eine andere Liga.
Rotorua: Der Ort, an dem der Boden ein Eigenleben führt
Irgendwo im Herzen der neuseeländischen Nordinsel liegt eine Stadt, die sich nicht entscheiden kann, ob sie ein Kurort, ein Vulkan oder eine besonders schlecht gelaunte Verwaltungseinheit ist. Rotorua liegt am Südufer eines Sees, der ihr ihren Namen gab, was faul ist, wenn man bedenkt, dass "Rotorua" auf Māori schlicht "zweiter See" heißt. Man hätte sich mehr Mühe geben können. Man hat es nicht getan.
Vor rund zweihundertfünfzigtausend Jahren explodierte hier die Erde mit einer Wucht, die heute in keinem Reisekatalog mehr Platz fände, und hinterließ einen Kraterrand, der seitdem tapfer die touristische Infrastruktur trägt. Der Untergrund scheint seither zu dem Schluss gekommen zu sein, dass Ruhe überbewertet ist.

Airlie Beach: Ein Strand, der keiner ist, und andere Wahrheiten
Airlie Beach liegt gut 1.100 Kilometer nördlich von Brisbane, was in australischen Maßstäben als Nachbarschaft gilt. Im Ort wohnen rund 1.300 Menschen. Im Netz liest man auch von 25.000, aber diese Zahl bezieht sich auf die weitere Umgebung und hat mit dem Ort ungefähr so viel zu tun wie ein Hochglanzprospekt mit dem Hotelzimmer.
Airlie Beach ist im Kern eine Straße mit Ambitionen. Die Shute Harbour Road verbindet Hostels, Pubs und Reisebüros mit der Gleichmäßigkeit eines Fließbands. Der Ort hat genau einen Daseinszweck: Er ist das Sprungbrett zu den Whitsunday Islands und zum Great Barrier Reef. Das Riff ist übrigens das größte lebende Bauwerk der Erde und wurde ohne Baugenehmigung errichtet, was in Queensland erstaunlich selten vorkommt. Airlie erfüllt seinen Zweck mit der Hingabe eines Wartezimmers, das genau weiß, dass niemand seinetwegen gekommen ist.
