FAQ - How Share Your Ride Works

Share Your Ride works like a public notice board: you post a listing with your route and travel date, or browse existing listings and reply to one that matches yours. Replies are sent to the listing owner by email through your free account - your address is never shown publicly. Listing owners are also welcome to add a phone number or messenger handle to their listing if they'd rather be contacted directly. Once you're in touch, work out the details together and split fuel, tolls and other costs along the way.

Share Your Ride focuses specifically on longer road trips rather than daily commutes, so the people browsing are looking for exactly that. Listings are shown on the destination page for your exact route (e.g. "Berlin → Munich"), which people find through search engines long after you posted - so your ride keeps getting seen by new travelers, not just whoever happens to check the site on the day you post. Posting is free and takes a minute.

Yes. Posting a listing, searching for a ride, and contacting other members is completely free. We cover our costs through affiliate banners, for example when a member books accommodation through one of our partner links.

No. Share Your Ride is a cost-sharing platform, not a commercial passenger transport service. Drivers should only ask fellow travelers to chip in towards fuel, tolls and other trip costs - not make a profit from carrying passengers. See our Disclaimer for details.

No, we don't offer any payment or escrow service. Driver and passenger should agree on the price and terms themselves before the trip. To avoid disappointment on either side, we recommend paying half when the trip starts and the other half on arrival.

Create a free account, then reply directly on their listing. Your message and email address are only shared with that member once you contact them - your address is never shown publicly on a listing.

Your listing stays visible until the departure date you entered. After that it no longer shows up among active listings, so travelers only ever see rides that are actually still happening.

Use the same common sense you would with any meeting of strangers:

• Talk to the other person by phone or video call before the trip, not just by email.
• For a longer trip, consider meeting for a coffee first so you can get a feel for each other in person.
• Exchange verifiable details in advance: full name, phone number, a social media profile that shows your real name and photo (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram), and - for the driver - driver's license number and license plate.
• Before you leave, tell a friend or family member who you're traveling with, the route, and your expected arrival time.
• Trust your instincts - if something feels off once you meet, it's fine to cancel.

Every listing can be reported from its page if something looks off, and we review reports promptly.
